Jessie Paul (Jessica Marciel) - JOHNNY LET ME GO (1964)
NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (World Pacific 402) The first of only two singles issued by 12 year old songstress, Jessie Paul. The daughter of jazz drummer, Irv Kluger, in 1964 while attending Van Nuys (California) Junior High School, Jessie was signed to a recording contract under an outfit by the name of 'Pan-Or Productions'. While a handful of tracks were recorded, only four would make it from recording tape to the A & B sides of two singles. The masters were acquired by Liberty Records and issued on its subsidiary label, World Pacific. The first coupling from February 1964 were, 'Johnny Let Me Go' b/w 'My First Lonely Night (Sukiyaki)'. The A-side presented here, features what could be described as a wonderful backing track including the talents of an uncredited 'Hollyridge Strings'. Sounding very much like it could have been a tune on one of Shelley Fabares' Colpix albums, it's an on-point musical example of dreamy and heavily orchestrated girly, teen pop. The B-side, which has English lyrics provided by James E. 'Buzz' Cason and Thomas Lesslie 'Snuff' Garrett, is the first known English version of the worldwide hit by Kyu Sakamoto from 1963. A few months later, the second single issued contained the tunes, 'Corners Of The Room' b/w 'Popcorn And Candy'. The first recordings by Jessie were arranged by George Tipton and conducted by Adam Ross. However, the A-side of her second single was produced by Jimmy King and arranged by Arthur Wright. The B-side was composed by Wayne and Dwain Mincy, who not only were composers but also had their own short-lived recording career. 'Popcorn And Candy' is quite a percussive, drum laden production with a sprinkling of some delightful Spectorian musical elements.
Although Jessie may not have had hits with her early recordings, they are indeed quality efforts that included the best musicians, arrangers and composers an artist could ever ask to work with. Jessie continued working within the music industry and still does to this day. Residing in Las Vegas and known as Jessica Marciel, she enjoys a busy and successful life as a vocal coach and also a radio host.

Interesting the 2 sing in a manner that makes it sounds like "they" are the lead singer. I think the fast pace beat of the song is their first choice. They seem to harmonize very well and just bounce along with the song. It would make a zippy easy listening song when you wanted something a bit "pick up the pace" mood. Thanks for sharing and where you got those photos is amazing.

I know about him mainly from the Outer Limits episode. Until recently I didn't know he had done any singing. On Street View the "Ranch" appears to extend halfway to I-210 and is certainly a valuable property. There are a few ramshackle structures on it, a dozen or so apparently inoperable vehicles, and piles of construction debris. One of the buildings appears to be occupied. I'd like to think that he is renting the property to a recycler (there are a few in the area) and lives in one of the mansions next door.

I lived at 14 & 1/2 Rae Street (Kingston 2) Rae Town, back in the day. Every Sunday was Raetown oldies session. Klassique Disco would play, put on by Mr. Bunny's bar. I went to St. Michael's Primary at the time. I heard this song every Sunday. That was more than 40 years ago. This song brings back warm childhood memories of the good Ole days. I listen to oldies to this day. As a hard-working man, now with a wife and child... this song takes on even greater significance. Rae town is not this same.

If anyone was wondering how or why it sounds like that in the beginning of the song, it’s called flanging and before digital it was done by making a copy of a tape then playing back both on another identical tape machine

Sadly this record never charted for Jimmy, the music sounds really started to change by 1965 as I think it was too sophisticated for am radio, granted it was in the Righteous Bros vain...still a great record only to become a major hit for the Carpenters in 1972...hitting #2 on US charts.
